Exploring from Dartmouth to Penzance 2nd – 9th July 2016

An excellent week exploring south coast resorts and estuaries.

Weather was mixed with a lot of grey clouds, some fog and sometimes cold but we were lucky as we had little rain during the day and had constant SW/W F3-5 winds most of the time giving us comfortable sailing with all canvas raised.

A big thank you to skipper George and Mate Fiona. Crew were Peter, Julie and David.

It was a very happy and fun week. George led and encouraged the team (not a 'Makefast' and disappear skipper!), Fiona was champion navigator. The crew were keen with lots of laughs as long as Peter was supplied with lots of biscuits.

In Dartmouth BB had prime mooring between Kingswear and the Town Quay.

During the week we visited Salcombe, the River Yealm, Fowey, Falmouth, the Helford River and ended in Penzance. As distances were mainly short we had plenty of time for boat checks/maintenance as well as exploring. We discovered that the wheel had a cracked spoke and needed welding. Here's Fiona with the repaired wheel in the dinghy on the way back from Fowey to BB.

Some highlights were visiting the Yealm and Helford Rivers, pastie lunches, seeing dolphins and small sunfish and visits from friends on route.

Items of interest for other crews are that:-

Many buoys in the Helford River have chains which in wind over tide conditions could damage the hull – we ended up anchoring.

On the end of the outside pontoon in Pendennis marina there is currently a beautiful 126 foot Jongert luxury sailing yacht 'Gloria' owned by Pete Townsend of 'The Who' which is up for sale. Asking price $5m.

A good character pub in Penzance with OK food is the Admiral Benbow.

Looking forward to our next sailing on BB.

Thank you to David for writing this blog and to everyone for making it a very pleasant week. George.
